Summertime - the livin’ is easy and online dating can be too!

The sun is shining; birds; are chirping; bees are buzzing, and the air conditioning is on — summer is here.

Photo by Uriel Mont at Pexels

In the world of dating, summer is usually associated with casual flings, while relationships go hand in hand with winter months. After all, the months of October through February have even earned the name of “cuffing season.” However, I would argue that June, July, and August are great months to be single, especially if you are looking for a serious relationship.

When the online dating website and app Zoosk analyzed data from their 40 million users, they found that more people resubscribed in August than during any other time during the year and that August is the second most active month of the year for women, just behind October. They also found July is a “peak time for people trying online dating for the first time,” meaning new people that might be a connection for you.

There are a few practical reasons why single people are more active on dating sites in the summer. First, people tend to be generally happier this season than the rest of the year, which is a great starting point to any date or conversation. Who would not be happier when an outing does not require layers upon layers of clothing or the risk of a blizzard canceling your plans?

People might also have extra time to devote to dating with some time off from work or school, plus extended weekends thanks to holidays like Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day. A Sunday night date suddenly becomes something to look forward to instead of a chore, as it might be during other parts of the year.

And while there are always great date ideas year-round, the possibilities for activities in the summer are seemingly endless — like checking out an outdoor winery, going for a walk along the beach (ice cream optional but encouraged), or wandering around a local fair. Even if you and your date do not exactly hit it off, it is hard to have a truly terrible time when you are enjoying the outdoors.

Therefore, you are in a great mood; you have some time in your schedule, and you have exciting ideas in mind — what should you do now to ensure a successful summer of matchmaking.

Well, you might want to think about giving your dating profile a mini seasonal makeover with updated photos, perhaps with a few cute shots. Remember, sunglasses are great, but potential matches do want to see your eyes in your photos. Prop them up on your head like a headband for an instantly casual snap that shows off your face! You may also want to include a little message bait with one of your goals for the season. Try something like, “summer goal: Fly a kite or catch a fish; does anyone have tips?” or “Who wants to join me in finally crossing skydiving off my bucket list?”

Summer is a wonderful time to reset and relax, especially when you get to spend time doing the things you enjoy with friends and family. Moreover, with everyone waking up each morning with an extra boost (thank you, vitamin D … and vaccines); it is also an excellent time to hit the dating scene.

How to Spot Dating Scams on Social Media by Miss Know It All

Miss Know It All

I often receive friend requests on social media. Their reasons for reaching out to me are sometimes questionable. By nature, I am suspicious when the individual says, “I attempted to send you a friend request because I find you very interesting and we seem to have so much in common, but I had trouble doing so. Would you message me and accept my friendship?” Then there is the one who pretends to want to be your friend, who will have images of their children but neglect to give any further details about themselves. I guess you are supposed to be a psychic. Many times, they claim to be a divorcee or widower searching for love, romance, or a lifetime partner. In most cases, these people are con artists seeking your cash.

Romance scams are more common than you think. Even if you do not use dating apps, a con artist can still target you. The Better Business Bureau Scam Tracker is getting reports from individuals conned through social media. There are signs that will aid you in spotting a fake romance before getting in too deep.

How The Fraud Works

You are scrolling through Instagram or Facebook when you get a direct message from a user you do not know. If you reply, the conversation will start innocently enough. At first, the scammer will claim to share your interests and likely have a social media account reflecting that. For example, if you post photos of your pets, they may claim to be a fellow animal lover. If you share pictures of your children, the scammer may pretend to be a fellow single parent.

The scammer will quickly profess his love for you without ever meeting you in person. However, something is off! Dramatic emergency crops up whenever you plan to meet. For example, your love interest suddenly needs financial support for their sick child. Fortunately, you can help by wiring funds or sending prepaid gift cards.

One social media user told BBB.org/ScamTracker about their experience: "He sent me a DM through my Instagram account and instantly started love bombing me. He promised me we would spend our lives together forever, and he would marry me. l planned to move to New York to live with him. Then an emergency struck, and he needed my help to get home from Barbados. He claimed he was a successful businessperson and a millionaire, so he would pay me back when he returned to the States. It never happened. Every time he was supposed to come to see me, another emergency would happen, and he needed more money from me."

Unfortunately, if you send money to the scammer, it will be gone for good. The person you fell in love with does not exist. To make matters worse, con artists will repeat the emergency scenarios until you realize the fraud or run out of money, whichever comes first.

How to Avoid Dating Scams

Know the signs of romance swindles. Romance swindles often start with someone who seems too perfect and immediately falls in love with you. The individual may be in a hurry to create a future together, but hesitant to meet you in person. The person will probably tell you they are overseas or in the military and often talk about the importance of trust to gain yours, and may share sad stories to pull on your heartstrings before asking you for money. Any of these tactics is a big red flag. If you notice similarities with someone who has messaged you on social media, think twice about your relationship.

Never send money or personal information to someone you have not met. Refrain from giving a stranger your credit card or bank account information. Do not wire money to or share the PIN of a gift card with someone you have never met. An online "friend" might not even really exist!  In addition, never provide your credit score.

Ask many questions. When you meet someone online, ask them specific questions about the details in their profile and pay close attention to their answers. If they lie, keeping their story straight will be challenging.

Do some research. Do a reverse image lookup of a person's profile picture to see if it appears elsewhere on the internet. Scammers often use the same stolen photos to create fake profiles. You can also search their name, email, and phone number to see if you find anything fishy.

You can do a background check by going to TruthFinder

BBB Scam Tracker is a free tool that anyone can use to report suspected fraud. Your reports warn others so they can avoid similar cons.

People Share Their Worst First Date by Miss Know It All

Miss Know It All

We asked folks to share their worst first date. Some will have you rolling on the floor laughing, while others will leave you gasping.

My date was 40 minutes late, so I left. Much later, I get a bunch of texts and posts about how I was a horrible person and a slut for not waiting for him.

I went to go pick her up and while chatting at her place we ended up staying just talking for about 50 minutes. I actually need 50 minutes because I timed it. She literally spoke for 48 minutes straight about her mental illnesses, her ex-boyfriend, family drama, falling out with her friends, and everything that was going wrong with her life she shared with me. Mind you, this was the first time she and I met in person.

I met this girl. She was a local in our town. I decided why not she is cute so I will talk to her. From the moment, I started talking to her, she was rude and had a general distaste for men. I stopped talking to her, and then it was like a split personality. She would then be nice and say sorry for how she acted, well a bit of back and forth of this and she wore me down. I am the one that agreed to a "date" just to shut her up. It was the most awkward "date" because I was just waiting for her to explode. We only talked for a few hours and then I was like, "well this was nice, but I have to get up early for work tomorrow. Maybe we can do this again." Therefore, I left. The next morning there was an explosion with her calling me every name in the book and being very insulting as if she had a genuine hate of men. I blocked her and never felt better. LOL

One time, after a date, rather than a kiss or a hug, a man shook my hand. It was very sad and limp.

I do not know if this counts since it was hours after our date, but the man I went on a date with got a little too intoxicated and wound up falling asleep during intercourse. I mean DURING intercourse.

Met a man at the bar, knew he was older but was not sure how much older. We wound up hitting it off, and I went home with him. He had told me his kids were home but sleeping soundly. Turns out, he had several kids, his oldest being 19 (I was 21 at the time). Long story short, I went to high school with two of his kids. I literally snuck out of his window in case they recognized me.

Woke up at a man’s house and he offered me a shirt (so nice right? Chivalry is not dead… so I thought.) Anyway, he was in his closet for like 10 minutes. I was as confused, as to why he was taking so long to pick out a shirt. That is when he turned to me and said, “I just can’t find a shirt that screams, ‘See you never.’” I have never been so humbled.

After what I thought was a lovely date, I dropped him off at his house. He got out of my car, turned around, and threw a whole ass Philly Cheesesteak and a large Dr. Pepper at my face through the window. Turns out, he was on drugs. I sent him to rehab. There was no second date.

Having Insurance When You Get Married

That big day has finally arrived. You are marrying the love of your life and ready to pronounce those vows: to have and to hold each other in sickness and in health til death do us part.

Yet, how many couples think about having enough insurance while planning their wedding and including the right kind and the right amount of insurance that will help protect their finances from lawsuits and accidents?

Following are some steps to take as a married couple:

If you and your spouse count on each other’s earnings to support your standard of living, you both need life insurance that will keep the other financially afloat if something happens. A life insurance payment can pay for funeral costs, rent or mortgage, household bills, and debts. It can also help pay for childcare and college for children and can leave a legacy for those you love.

Your employer might offer supplemental life insurance as an employee benefit. However, the amount of coverage you get through a group insurance plan might not be enough. In addition, you may not keep that coverage if you leave the job. That is why you should get an individual life insurance policy.

There are two main types of life insurance: term and permanent. Term life insurance lasts for a certain number of years, such as 10, 15, 20, or 30. Permanent life insurance lasts for a lifetime and, therefore, is more expensive than term life.

A term life insurance policy can be ideal for a young couple because it is affordable, says Sharif Muhammad, a licensed insurance agent, Certified Financial Planner, and owner of Unlimited Financial Services. The policy’s term should be long enough to cover the needs of children—such as the years until they graduate college. Search for a policy that offers the option to convert to permanent coverage “so you have the option if you want to maintain the policy after the term runs its course,” states Muhammad.

You can shop for life insurance policies online, including options for getting instant life insurance. However, consider working with an independent insurance agent who can help you determine how much coverage you need and will shop around for you to find the best policy for your needs.

How to Save on Life Insurance

Life insurance is a lot cheaper than you think. A survey by LIMRA and Life Happens found that half of the respondents thought a $250,000 term life policy for a healthy 30-year-old would cost $500 or more a year. However, the average cost of such a policy is only about $160 a year, or about $13 a month. Your age, health, policy type, and amount of coverage you want will affect the price you pay for life insurance.

“The younger and healthier you are when you get coverage, the more affordable it is,” says Amy Shepard, a Certified Financial Planner with Sensible Money. She suggests it can be worth it to pay a little more for a policy with a bigger benefit now in order to ensure the payout will be enough to cover any future expenses you might have, such as a house with a mortgage or children. You could also buy more life insurance in the future, but you will pay rates based on your older age and any health problems that develop in the interim.

Why You Need Disability Insurance

According to the Social Security Administration, over one in four of today’s 20-year-olds will become disabled before reaching age 67. If you become part of that statistic and cannot work because of a disability, you and your spouse would likely feel the financial pinch from the loss of your income.

Workers’ compensation insurance will pay only if the injury or illness is work-related. It may be challenging to qualify for Social Security disability benefits, and the average payout is just $1,236 a month. That is why it is important to have disability insurance to fill the gap. Think of it as a protection for your paycheck because it will replace a percentage of your income if an illness or injury leaves you unable to work, temporarily or permanently. You can use disability insurance to replace income during maternity leave, Shepard says.

How to Get Disability Insurance

If employed, you can get disability coverage through a group plan at work. A survey by the Society for Human Resource Management found that 71% of employers offer long-term disability insurance and 61% offer short-term disability insurance. Typically, group disability coverage will replace up to 60% of income, Shepard says. The drawback to relying on group coverage is that you cannot keep it if you leave your job. “I think it’s always a great idea to take advantage of group coverage if you have it and supplement it with a private policy,” Shepard says. That way, you will still have coverage regardless of your employment situation.

If you already have group disability insurance, the amount of individual coverage you can get is limited. Shepard recommends working with an independent insurance agent to coordinate individual coverage with any group coverage.

How to Save Money on Disability Insurance

Getting disability insurance through a group plan at work is usually the most affordable option and the easiest. If your employer has a group disability insurance plan offered to all employees at no cost, you will automatically qualify for coverage without having to answer questions about your health or having to take any medical tests, according to Life Happens.

Individual disability insurance can be more expensive because your age and health can affect the cost. You can save money by getting disability insurance while you are young and healthy, Muhammad says.

You also can keep down the cost of disability insurance by opting for long-term coverage rather than short-term coverage, Shepard says. It is more important to have a policy that will protect you for a significant period, and you can rely on an emergency fund (if you have one) to replace your income if you have a short-term disability.

See if any professional organizations you might belong to offer a group policy for long-term disability insurance. As long as you maintain your membership, group coverage will probably be more affordable than individual coverage.

Health Insurance - Coordinate Coverage with Your Spouse

You can typically change your health insurance plan through work (for group coverage) or through the health insurance marketplace (for individual coverage) once a year during open enrollment. However, marriage is one of the life events that allow you to change your coverage outside of open enrollment.

If you or your spouse does not already have health insurance, you may get coverage now through one or the other’s plan. If you both have coverage, it’s a good time to review your plans to see if you should maintain separate policies or get joint coverage, says DeDe Jones, a Certified Financial Planner and managing director of Innovative Financial.

You might find that, for example, you can get better, more affordable coverage by switching to your spouse’s health insurance plan.

How to Save on Health Insurance

A common way to lower the cost of health insurance is to opt for a plan with a high deductible. Premiums on high-deductible plans are lower because you have to pay more out of pocket until coverage kicks in. This type of plan can make sense for healthy, young adults who do not take many or any prescription drugs and do not require frequent trips to the doctor. However, you should not bet on your good health to help you avoid paying for the deductible. If your employer offers a health savings account along with a high-deductible health plan, set aside money in that account to cover your deductible and other out-of-pocket medical costs.

If you cannot afford to max out your health savings account or cover the cost of your deductible, a high-deductible plan might not be the best way for you to save money on health insurance, Muhammad says.

Alert Your Auto Insurer to Your New Status

Let your auto insurance agent know that you have gotten married. Other household members are required to be on your policy if they are licensed drivers, even if they do not drive your car regularly.

If you and your spouse each have a car and coverage through separate insurers, it usually makes sense to choose one company and buy one policy. You will get a discount for insuring more than one vehicle, plus additional savings if you also buy your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance from that company.

How to Save on Auto Insurance

Even if your insurer offers a discount for insuring two vehicles, it can pay to shop around for lower rates with other insurers. Muhammad says that he and his wife reshop their insurance every two years to ensure they get the best deal. If you are happy with your current insurer, ask about other auto insurance discounts that you might qualify for. For example, you might save money by paying your bill annually rather than monthly.

To soften the blow of making a lump-sum car insurance payment, Shepard recommends setting aside money each month in a savings account to have enough to pay the bill when it’s due. Also, ask about increasing your deductible to lower your premium.

Homeowners' or Renters' Insurance

Make sure you have enough coverage. Now that you are married, you might have more belongings in your household. So make sure you have enough homeowners or renters coverage to replace those belongings in case of a major disaster like a fire, tornado, or hurricane.

To figure out how much coverage you need, start by doing a home inventory. Go room to room and make a list of your belongings and, if possible, their estimated cost. An easy way to do an inventory is to take photos or videos of your entire home, including the inside of closets, drawers, and storage spaces. There are also home inventory mobile apps such as MyStuff and Nest Egg.

If you have an “actual cash value” policy, the payout you would get would cover the cost of your belongings minus depreciation of their current value. It is better to get a policy with replacement cost coverage. This will cost more, but it will cover replacing your items.

If you have expensive items such as wedding rings, artwork, or collectibles, you might need to add a floater or rider to your policy to provide additional coverage for those items. Call your insurance agent to discuss your coverage needs now that you are married.

How to Save on Homeowners Insurance

Shop around to find the best homeowners insurance by getting quotes from at least three insurers, or work with an independent agent who can do the shopping for you.

Ask about multi-policy discounts. You can save money if you have more than one type of policy, such as a homeowner and auto insurance, with an insurer. You can lower your premium by raising your deductible. Adding safety features such as an alarm system and smoke alarms can lead to discounts.

Keep in mind as you look for ways to save money on all of your insurance policies that it is important not to skimp on coverage just to save money.

“Shorting yourself on insurance is a fool’s endeavor,” Jones says. Paying for good insurance can seem unnecessary if you never make a claim. However, insurance is for the disasters in life, so you do not have to gut your savings or lose your home or vehicle without a financial safety net.

Why You Should Never Lend Money to Friends or Relatives by Miss Know It All

Miss Know It All

I am a big fan of TV court cases and see my share of civil suits regarding people coming up with outlandish reasons for not paying back their loans.

You may think helping your financially strapped friend or relative is the correct thing to do, but doing so could totally ruin your relationship. If you need some convincing, here are some reasons lending money to friends, family or anyone is a bad idea.

You Are a Last Resort. An individual comes to you because he or she cannot get a loan from a bank. This means traditional lenders, who add on high interest rates, consider the person to be a high risk to lending money. Most loans to friends and family have a very low or nonexistent interest rate. By loaning someone money, you are taking on a ton of risk for a fraction of the payout a bank would normally get. You can usually add anywhere from five to fifteen percent interest annually. Any amount higher is usury or illegal.

Most likely, you will never see your money. Most times, people who borrow money from friends or family never pay the loan back in full. If you have the money, just give them the funds, understanding that you will never see that money. You can also give the money as a gift.

Most loans involve parents lending money to their adult children. Sometimes the reason for the loan was a good one, like a one-time emergency that was completely unexpected. Often the reason is not to sound and parents are simply rewarding bad financial habits. If your adult children think you will bail them out of any bad financial situation they get themselves into, then there will never be reasons for them to develop good financial practices.

You might actually need the money. Unexpected emergencies and job losses happen. When they do, you will need extra money to pay your bills and stay afloat. If you have an extremely well-stocked emergency fund, then maybe you will not miss the money that you lent to someone. Only a quarter of Americans have more than $10,000 in their savings account. Therefore, if you are like most people, you will want your money back as soon as possible. Draining your savings to help a friend could leave you in the same predicament as the borrower.

Having to ask for overdue payments will eventually get uncomfortable. Since some do not repay most loans, there is probably going to be a point where your friend or a family member falls behind on payments. When that happens, it is up to you to follow up with them about their late payments. That conversation is going to be incredibly awkward. However, it gets worse. They are likely going to keep falling behind on payments. You are going to have to keep following up with them each time to let them know they are late.

It could ruin your relationship forever. After a few late payments, you have essentially become a debt collector for your loved one, and this will affect your relationship. You will be upset that they did not pay you back, which shows that keeping promises to you is not a priority for them. They will feel uncomfortable every time they see you because they know they owe you money. Holiday dinners and going out with your friends will now come with a ton of baggage.

If you are going to advance money to a friend or family member, draw up a promissory note showing when the loan is to be paid. You and the borrower sign the note. Keep a copy for yourself and give a copy to the borrower. If it is not in writing, you can say “farewell” to your loan.

Better yet, adhered to this motto, “Neither a borrower nor a lender be.”

How Indonesia's New Sex Laws will Affect Tourism

As the COVID-19 pandemic subsides, international travelers have been going back to the popular resort island of Bali, hoping that Indonesia’s beaten tourism industry is on the road to recovery.

Recently, the parliament passed new laws banning cohabitation and sex outside of marriage. The laws apply to residents, foreign expats, and vacationers in the country.

Although the changes are not expected to kick in for at least another three years, the new criminal code could put foreigners off visiting that country and hurt its global reputation, starving it of vital tourism revenues.

A Turnaround for Travel Operators

“From our point of view as tourism industry players, this law will be very counterproductive for the tourism industry in Bali, particularly the chapters about sex and marriage,” said Putu Winastra, chairperson of the country’s largest tourism group, the Association of The Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA).

The new laws are a response to rising religious conservatism in Muslim-majority Indonesia in recent years, with parts of the country enforcing strict Islamic codes. In Bali, the population is predominantly Hindu and, as a result, has had a more liberal social environment that appeals to Western tourists.

Indonesian lawmakers have defended the new laws, saying they were an attempt to satisfy “public aspiration” in a diverse nation. Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly said that it was not easy for a multicultural and multi-ethnic country to make a criminal code that “accommodates all interests.”

Winastra says that the new laws caught him and others off guard because they felt the government had been very enthusiastic about increasing foreign tourist arrivals. “Now there will now be rules and laws that will burden tourists and the industry,” he added. Like most major tourist hotspots around the world, Bali suffered significant economic turmoil during the COVID-19 pandemic. From over 500,000 foreign visitors each month, arrivals slumped to as low as 45 for the entire year of 2021.

However, with the pandemic in retreat, government and tourism industry officials had been forecasting a healthy revival, potentially bringing in billions of dollars of revenue for the Indonesian economy.

The World Travel & Tourism Council, a global industry body, forecast annual growth of 10% for Indonesia’s travel industry over the next 10 years, predicting the sector would contribute nearly $118 billion dollars to the country’s GDP while creating over 500,000 jobs each year for the next decade.

Local guide Ken Katut told CNN Travel he believed things were “progressing in the right direction” in the tourism industry after G20 leaders held a summit in Bali last November. Hotels were bustling with delegates, Ken said, and he was “thrilled” to be busy ferrying tourists around the island. “The G20 was great for us who had been out of work during the pandemic,” he said. “It really brought Bali back to life.” Now, some worry the momentum will lessen just as it was picking up again.

What Now?

Under the new criminal code, anyone – Indonesians or foreigners – found guilty of adultery or premarital relations could face 12 months in jail. It is not yet clear how these laws will be enforced.

“Do tourist couples (visiting Bali) have to prove that they are married? Should we be asking them if they are married or not?” wonders Putu.

“Now foreign tourists will think twice about traveling to Bali because someone might jail them for violating the laws.”

Rights groups have noted how the laws will disproportionately affect women and members of the LGBTQ+ community, and added that they could “provide an avenue for selective enforcement.”

Hotel operators have also objected to the laws, saying it would be difficult for them to enforce.

“Asking couples if they are married or not is a very private area and it will be an impossible task to do,” said Ida Bagus Purwa Sidemen, Executive Director of the Indonesian Hotel & Restaurant Association (PHRI).

Sidemen feels that the Indonesian government will review the laws following a public backlash. “We just can’t be asking every couple about their legal marital statuses. It will create huge problems for us,” he said.

“But what is going to happen to us now if the new laws scare tourists off? Will we go back to how we were during the pandemic?”

“The government can’t want tourists (revenue) and enforce these laws that will scare people away. It just makes no sense.”
