Virtual Book Tour Spotlight - Something Lost by Bernadette Marie

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

Saying goodbye is sometimes the beginning.

Craig Turner was Coach Diaz’s star player, back in the day. He was held in high regard, until he broke the rules and dated the coach’s daughter. Young and stupid, his affection for her lasted until graduation, and then it was time to face the real world--but his love for her would never leave him.

Rachel Diaz became who her father wanted her to be, a well educated, well traveled, successful woman, but she holds a well full of secrets from the outside world. As a high school therapist, she uses her past traumas to help others overcome their own.

When the Fabulous Five arrive at Coach Diaz’s funeral, to pay their respects, a rekindling happens between them all—and between Craig and Rachel.

Is Rachel woman enough to face her demons and is Craig man enough to accept them? Or will their encounter be as brief as the affair they had a decade ago, behind her father’s back?

"Dr. Olivia Chasen,” Santa’s jolly baritone popped her mental fuzzy bubble.

She stopped as she struggled to whirl around. “Me?” She touched her chest with a dramatic flourish she didn’t know she possessed.

A powerful spotlight illuminated her; its heat burned her already flushed face.

She pressed a clammy palm to her chest. “How do you know my name?” The haze in her mind was paralyzing all cognitive function.

“My dear girl,” Santa chuckled, “you should know by now that Santa knows everything and everyone,” he tapped an index finger to his temple.

Santa Claus turned to address the waiting line. “Girls, Boys, Moms, Dads, everyone, if you don't mind waiting for a brief moment, I'd like for Olivia,” he pointed a white gloved finger at her, “to please come up here on stage, and tell me what she wants for Christmas.”

She stood dumbfounded as the audience and the people in line clapped and chanted her name, “Olivia! Olivia! Olivia!”

Oh no! What was she going to do? She couldn’t possibly go up onto that stage. She was far too shy to address a theater full of people.

But if she didn’t go that would be so unexciting and so like the old Olivia.

But she wasn't unexciting! She was the new Olivia, and she was exciting! And she wanted to have fun! Correction: She was determined to have fun. Besides, she’d never see these people—her fellow passengers—ever again.

Bernadette Offers Five Tips to Romance in Marriage

It’s amazing quickly a romantic relationship can become stale when marriage vows are taken. It’s not that a couple no longer pines for the other, but life quickly will get in the way when a couple wakes each morning together. It’s imperative to remember what made the relationship spark in the beginning and bring that to the marriage. It won’t happen without thinking about it, especially with careers, in-laws, and eventually children mixed in. Here are five great tips to keeping that spark in a relationship, especially after marriage.

  1. Remember to use the words I love you in their full context. Love you can easily replace the sentiment, but without the I, it doesn’t apply the same.

  1. Always remember, even during an argument, never leave your partner without letting them know how much you care. You never know if those might be the last words you get to say to them.

  1. Love notes tucked into lunches, bags, drawers, etc. are always fun to find. It let’s one partner know the other was thinking of them.

  1. Compliment your partner every day. It’s important to let them know you notice them.

  1. Say Thank you. Yes, chores around the house should be done by both partners equally, but it’s okay to say thank you for the mundane things as well as things they go out of their way to do.

Though some of my tips might not seem romantic, knowing your partner thinks about you and appreciates you is key to keeping that romance in a marriage.

Tickled by his plan, she pulled him closer by his polo shirt collar and teased his wildly exotic-juiced lips with her tongue. He palmed her waist and drew her flush against his hardened body in the way she had dreamt about from the day she had been locked up in jail on his instruction.

“I’ve forgiven you,” she mumbled, ending their kiss.

Darkening his eyes, he sighed. “About what?”

“Locking me up!”

He smacked her butt cheeks and captured her chin with one hand. “I’ll buy you whatever you want. All I ask is for you to never mention that incident again. I regret it.”

Giggling, she twerked his nipple between her fingers through his shirt before breaking loose from his arms and taking cover behind the couch.

“All the money in the world can’t buy me what I really want.”

Laughing, he chased after her. “Try me.”

Sprinting ahead while laughing, she ended up in the bedroom.

“Give me your heart, Gavin. That’s what I want.”

Grinding to a halt at her demand, reality seemed to hit him.

“We date, we don’t marry. We stand, we don’t fall. We are the Billionaire Brothers.

“Those quietly murmured words of yours are they written somewhere?”

“No. Each word is carved in gold letters on my wall at home and on my heart. Those words mock me now. My brothers and I have lived by my words for years. Damn! My heart hasn’t been part of any deal I’ve had with any woman in the last ten years or more?”

“However, as you know, Moyowa Boyo isn’t any woman.”

Staring into her eyes, he nodded. “You’ve wormed your way into my world, dominated my thoughts and you’re now framed within my heart.”

“Is that a bad thing, Gav?”

He turned crimson and set his mouth in a hard line.

“What’s wrong, Gavin?” She tugged his arm. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

“It’s nothing,” was all he muttered.

“Don’t say that. We were laughing a minute ago and suddenly, you switched off. Was it anything I said?”

“It has nothing to do with you, Moyo.”

“But it’s something and I want you to tell me because it bothers you. What bothers you, bothers me. You rescued me when I asked you to because what bothered me became your problem.”

She took his hand and led him to sit on the bed in the vast, well-furnished bedroom. He followed but his mood grew downcast. Shutting his eyes, he grunted.

“I’m trying to shake off the eerie feeling creeping into my head.”

“I’m listening. I’ve told you a lot about me. It’s your turn to let me inside your heart, inside your head. I want to know what makes you who you are, Gavin. Why do you have that slogan about not falling?”

“I’m not sure you want to hear this.”

“I’m telling you I’m ready to listen. Wait ooo! You haven’t killed anyone, have you?”

“No.” His mouth twisted.

Ehen! So, what has upset you?”

Searching him with her eyes, she caressed his jawline and ran her fingers along his brow.

“I can’t love you, Moyo.”

Her smile slipped and faded as she let go of his face. It was as if he had cut open her chest, punched her in the face, and stamped her head to the ground. Dumbfounded to the point she fell back on the bed, she blinked back hot tears. Was she dreaming? Drawing in a pool of air, she jolted upright again.

“Excuse me? What did you say?”

“It’s complicated, Moyo.”

“Then, uncomplicate it for me, Gavin. Be quick about it because you can’t fly all the way from America to Warri, whisper sweet things in my ears all night and, tell me you want to be with me. Then, you add the fact you want to see my dad to make it official. You get me all happy and then you drop this on me? Are you a sadist? A narcissist? Pick one.”

“No! No! It’s not what you think.”

“What are you doing, breaking my heart like this, Gav?”

“It’s not that simple for me, Moyo.”

“What are you saying? That you’ve been wasting my time and lying to me?”

“Then what?”

“I’m saying, we can be together. I’ll give you every material thing you want but I can’t give you, my heart.”

“Then, keep it for the woman you can love.” Tears peeped into her eyes, peeked out at the corners, and threatened a teary storm. “You’re talking crazy.”

“That’s the problem. I can’t love any woman.”
