Are You a Victim of Cyber Flashing?

You may not be aware of AirDrop, but this feature was introduced in 2015 by Apple that allows users to send images to people through an iPhone. The problem is you may receive an obscene image from an unknown person on your iPhone, and this is known as Cyber Flashing.

Cyber Flashing is sending unwanted vulgar photos, or videos over the phone to a person close by, in an unrestricted area. It is usually sent incognito and can be seen as sexual harassment. It can be even more problematic when the image is sent to a minor, which can be seen as a criminal act.

Policymakers in New York City are presently looking to introduce a bill that would criminalize cyber flashing.  This bill would make it a misdemeanor for a person to send an unsolicited sexually explicit video or image to another person with intent to harass, annoy or alarm such other person. The bill would impose a penalty of up to one year in jail, or a fine of up to $1,000, or both.

In the meantime, you can stop cyber flashing from happening to you. To do so, check your settings. Swipe up from the bottom of your screen and get the pull-up menu where the Flashlight and Bluetooth settings hide. In the bottom left of the screen, you will see AirDrop. Click it and turn it off or set it to Contacts only.
