Are You Considering a Domestic Partnership Instead of Marriage? By Miss Know It All

Miss Know It All
Many couples wonder whether they should get married or just live together, but a domestic partnership may be another option.

Domestic Partnership is an interpersonal relationship between two individuals who live together and share a common domestic life, but are not legally married to each other or anyone else. People in domestic partnerships receive benefits that guarantee the right of survivorship, hospital visitation, and others; it provides protection for couples who are not legally married or part of a Civil Union. This agreement is suitable for all types of "Living Together" couples who are in a committed relationship.

The definition of what is a domestic partnership or what is a civil union may vary depending on the city or state in which one lives. While local laws vary, usually, there are few common requirements as to who can enter a Domestic Partnership:

Age - Most often, people will need to be over 18 years of age. Some states even have age requirements for senior citizens.

Commitment - Partners must live together and be in a committed relationship. How long the couple has been together also matters, usually it must be longer than six months or a year.

Not In Another Agreement - A couple cannot be in another agreement (or marriage) and sometimes a waiting period is mandatory before when one arrangement ends and the next agreement can begin.

Proof of commitment - Some states may require that you show information displaying your commitment such as lease agreements, mutual bills, or state IDs listing the same address.

Proving Domestic Partnership May Include:

·       Common ownership of a car or other property (joint deed or mortgage agreement)
·       A driver's license listing a common address
·       Proof of joint bank accounts, credit card accounts and loans
·       Designation as the primary beneficiary for life insurance, retirement benefits, or under a partner's will

The Benefits of a Domestic Partnership Are

·       Ability to get coverage on a family health insurance policy
·       Right to family leave for a sick partner
·       Right to bereavement leave
·       Visitation rights in hospitals and jails

Local and state governments support Domestic Partnerships, however, when it comes to filing federal taxes, partners cannot claim head of household with a partner as a dependent and cannot file as married filing jointly, or married filing separately. Another complication of tax filing is determining how you define "community funds" and who paid what to determine who can claim credits or deductions.

If you decide to file for Domestic Partnership, as mentioned, laws vary from one state to another; some have this type of agreement characterized more like a business or corporate agreement, and you will have to apply with the department that manages business agreements. Other cities will require you to apply with the county clerk or recorder. You may also have to apply to be included in a Domestic Partners Registry for statewide recognition. Some government agencies even provide a certificate or a laminated card as proof. Since laws vary greatly, seeking advice from a lawyer about your state's requirements is essential.

When a Woman Accuses a Man of Sexual Transgressions By Miss Know It All

Image by mohamed Hassan from Pixabay

Miss Know It All
Recently a woman accused a candidate, eager to be President, of sexual assault. Allegedly, this incident occurred in the nineties.  Then a second woman came forward doing an interview accusing him of unwanted touching at a fundraising event in 2009.

Whether these allegations are true or not, I do not know, but I do have a message for all men, no matter what position you hold: Please be very careful as to what you say or how you act around women in the office or any space. Some words, phrases, or physical acts can be misinterpreted.

The following are some examples that can land you hot water.

A worker at a complex said to a resident, “I was thinking about you last week.”

Back in the late sixties, an employee put his arm around my shoulder without my permission. I politely removed his hand. I was in my early twenties at the time and choked it up to him behaving badly.

In the early seventies, a co-worker patted me on my behind. In an angry tone, I said, “My brother could never do that to your sister.”

I remember my mother, who passed away in 2019 at age 95, said a male employee had chased her around the office. He thought that was funny. Moreover, this occurred in the early fifties.

What makes some men think they have the right to approach women in uninviting matters is complex. Although I took an anthropology course in college, I am by no means an expert when it comes to men and how they see or approach women daily, but I do realize sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, or sexual assault is nothing new. The only difference is women during my mother or grandmother’s era did not have the option to file a complaint to someone in authority nor were these acts taken seriously.

Today, many women refuse to remain silent, and the next thing you know someone is accusing you of a sexual transgression. My advice to all men is to always be professional at all times, and always think before you open your mouth or approach a woman. Your actions, whether they occurred twenty years ago or two weeks ago, do have consequences.

Read an Excerpt

We stopped for lunch at a local restaurant. As I sat down at one of the long benches, my cell phone rang. Charlotte’s face appeared on the screen. I ran outside to answer it.

“So I heard you had a late night,” Charlotte said.

“Not the time.” I looked over my shoulder to make sure no one had followed me out. “The police think it might not be an accident.”

Charlotte audibly sighed. “Is that why it was a long night? You were with the police?”

“No, one of Ă–sp’s friends is a police officer.”

“You mean Thor.”

“Please don’t encourage Mother. His name is Ă–sp. I don’t want her nickname to stick.”

“Her nickname? I called him that,” she corrected me. “He looks like Thor.”

I looked over my shoulder at the restaurant’s entrance. “Looks like? How do you know what he looks like? Did you cyberstalk him? Check the hotel’s website for the staff’s pictures?”

“No. Mom texted me pictures.”

Horrified, I asked, “And how did she get them?”

“She followed you to the lobby.”

“Nice.”

“Give her a break. She was excited. It was like seeing you on your first date.”

“I’ve been on dates before.” I glanced over my shoulder again for any of the suspects.

“But Mom didn’t see that. She didn’t see the first dates, the proms. That was all Dad.”

“Would you like it if Dad followed you out on a date?”

“I don’t think Dad cares about those things.”

She was probably right.

“Anyway, this police officer I met last night said the autopsy must have shown something because they hadn’t closed the case yet.”

“So you turned your date into a fact-finding mission?

“It was a happy coincidence.” I thought I heard the door open behind me. I turned to see no one. It must have been the wind.

“Why do you keep looking behind you?” Charlotte asked.

“Just making sure none of the suspects can hear me.”

“Suspects? You’ve turned your traveling companions into suspects?” She paused before adding, “Again?”

I ignored her. “Hurry up, Charlotte. Someone is going to come out looking for me soon.”

“Fine. If he drowned, I bet they’d say it was an accident. They’d find water in his lungs if he drowned. Maybe the autopsy didn’t find water in his lungs. That doesn’t rule out a cardiac event. That may be hard to prove. Most likely they are waiting for the toxicology results. That’s going to take a few days.”

I looked at the restaurant door and wished I could run in for my backpack, so I could take notes. “And what would that show?”

“Whatever was in his system. Maybe drugs, poisons.”

“I forgot to ask. If it was poison, how long before he died would he have to be poisoned?”

“Depends on the poison. Probably an hour or two, I guess.”

“Could you get a poison through TSA?”

“In something in a bottle with less than three ounces, sure. Could have been a powder. They could have bought it locally too. Rat poison and antifreeze has been used in a lot human deaths.”

“Can you think of anything specific I should look for?”

“You should look who’s coming up behind you,” she said before hanging up.

Yummy Desserts are a Treat for All Occasions by Vivienne Diane Neal

I am a devotee when it comes to eating chocolate chip cookies and this is where Yummy Brothers come into the picture.

While most kids are busy playing video games on their computers or exploring sites on their smartphones, there are four brothers, all under the age of 11, running a catering company, of course, along with their parents, called Yummy Brothers, which specializes in Yummy Cookies, Yummy Beverages, Yummy Cookie Platters, and Yummy Dog Treats.

Without saying, their Chocolate Chip Cookies, which I had ordered for Valentine’s Day is to die for. This may not be the most appropriate phrase for a senior citizen like me, but these cookies are simply scrumptious, soft and chewy with lots of chocolate chips, and you won’t be able to eat just one cookie.

But hold on. I decided to order their Lemon White Chocolate Chip Cookies and they are out of this world with their soft and chewy consistency. Just like their chocolate chip cookies, you won’t be able to eat just one.

So, for more information on this innovative company and their other cookies and products sold, hurry on over to their site at https://yummybrothers.com/

Love Online: A Singular Way to Meet Up

Online dating has been a thing for a long time. And it’s getting to be a bigger thing by the day! Studies indicate that the number of couples who meet online has nearly doubled since 2009. Online dating offers more diversity and expands your dating universe beyond your neighborhood and workplace. It’s getting easier, too. The number of dating sites has grown as more people accept online as a norm.

With thousands of sites out there, how do you know which is the best online dating for you? All online dating services use matchmaking software to connect you with potential dating partners. Typically these services ask you to complete a survey that probes your attitudes and preferences. Sites that employ the most comprehensive surveys are—at least theoretically—better equipped to find you a suitable match. So put those extra-curious sites on the top of your list as you explore the many options.

But you have to put in some work, too. Just like in the “real” dating world, online dating can be a competitive sport! Building an online dating profile that expresses your unique personality and presents you in a positive light is absolutely essential.

Many publications and dating sites offer guidance on how to do that. Professional photographers have developed a sub-specialty in creating portraits for online dating profiles. Even old-fashioned matchmakers have expanded their services to include helping you create an attractive profile.

While many singles appreciate the range of choices online dating services offer, others prefer to narrow their scope—and increase the likelihood of finding the perfect partner—by using sites that are geared to their particular dating requirements. You’ll find sites that specialize in connecting farmers and other rural residents. Sites for cat lovers, tall people, allergy-prone daters, marijuana users, and even Trekkies. Niche marketing is alive and well in the online dating realm.

Even if you think of yourself as the consummate dater, the online dating world has its own set of rules. Some of these apply to the new etiquette of social media. How long should you wait before responding to someone who reaches out to you? Are there certain conversations you should avoid? Is it okay to break up with someone online?

But there are also important safety precautions you should take. Some amount to common sense. Use your own car or take public transit when meeting your date in person until you truly trust his or her character, for example. Other rules protect your privacy and prevent ongoing, unwanted attention from someone who just doesn’t float your boat. Don’t share too much information or give out your phone number too quickly. And while dating can often mean meeting up for a drink, stay sober. You might not always be in control of your feelings, but you should always be in control of your body.

Dating During the Coronavirus Crisis by Miss Know It All

Miss Know It All
There is so much information, false information, and crazy rumors circulating on how we should protect ourselves during this crisis. And if you are dating or searching for love either online or in person, it is pertinent that you protect yourself and others by using common sense.

One of the most important methods to protect oneself is to wash your hands well and often after using the bathroom, touching surfaces, or handling food with soap and water for 20 seconds or longer, something we should have been doing long before this outbreak surfaced. And cover your mouth when sneezing, and coughing.

Before engaging in sexual intercourse, you should know your partner’s status. You are more at risk of getting STDs or HIV/AIDS than getting the Coronavirus if you are participating in this act indiscriminately. As a doctor once said on a TV talk show during the HIV/AIDs epidemic, “If you are having sex, you are participating in high-risk behavior.” So, no matter how well you may think you know your partner, or if you are just meeting someone for the first time and can’t control those lust demons, please encourage your partner to use a condom. If he refuses to use a condom, then walk away. #

How Dating Terms Have Changed by Vivienne Diane Neal

I must say, “I am dating myself.” No, this is not what you think. I haven’t gone on a date since 1982. But at least I knew back then where I stood when it came to dating and romance, where people vocally said what they meant, and not beat around the bush. There was no internet or social media to fall back on when it came to starting or ending a romantic relationship. If you no longer wanted to be involved with someone, you would face that individual, communicate on the phone or write a Dear John letter.

But today, dating has taken a different route when it comes to the way people deal with dating and romance. The phrases used when referring to dating are so complex that I thought I would list some of these expressions that would make my mother, who passed away at the age of 95 in 2019 and my grandmother who passed away at the age of 90 in 1985, scratch their heads. Boy, how times have changed. I am just wondering what they would say if they were alive today. They would probably be as befuddled as I am, at age 73.

Following are some off the wall words that were created by millennials, those born between 1980-1995, which are now trending when it comes to dating and romance:

Laybe or Layby - strongly feels their relationship isn't going to last longer than rain shower and have turned to a couple of strong prospects, just to be prepared; this individual doesn’t like being single and is ready to make that leap without much hesitation.

Hang Out - has replaced the word dating, which no one says anymore. Hanging out has very little commitment and both parties can feel comfortable being together without any unrealistic romantic expectations.

Cushing - people who are already in a relationship but will flirt with others on the side just in case things don’t work out.

Breadcrumbing - a hit and miss message, a playful "hi" or "what's up" to check-in. But, it's just enough contact to lure a target into imagining the realm of a possible relationship, when in reality there's no chance.

Turning - hitting on an individual and hoping for a more intimate connection.

Slow fades - the relationship is about to end. There are very little texts, social media contacts, and little direct messages.

Ghosting - is nothing new; it means the person has done a disappearing act and you will never receive any more texts, phone calls or social media messages.

Benching - An individual may bench someone they've dated, along with a couple of others, as a way of saying, "I'm just not sure yet!"

Umfriend - another way of saying, “A friend with benefits.”

Catch and Release - is all fun and games, at least for the person doing the fishing? These people don't seem to care about the release part or the hurt feelings that may result.

I wonder what words will be used to describe the dating scene, fifty years from now? :)
